THE POWER OF A Cup of Water
Our Story
When my mom and I traveled to Uganda on a short-term mission trip in 2014, I had a very ordinary experience that felt extraordinary. Outside a school we were visiting sat a quiet, stony-faced three-year-old boy who was detached from the other children. His flat demeanor was in marked contrast to the exuberance of the other kids playing in the school yard. His sadness pulled me to him.
I just brought him a cup of water.
He said nothing, but he looked at me with a face transformed by joy. An ordinary act that felt extraordinary.
This small seemingly insignificant experience reminds me of the easy way God has given us to love Him.
I just brought him a cup of water.
He said nothing, but he looked at me with a face transformed by joy. An ordinary act that felt extraordinary.
This small seemingly insignificant experience reminds me of the easy way God has given us to love Him.
"For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; naked and clothed Me. I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink...The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, to the least of them, you did it for Me." Matthew 25:35-40
That cup of water has grown into the ministry “His Love and Sonshine,” which is focused on supporting the school where I had a chance to offer that little boy a drink. Our bottom-line goal is to keep the doors of this school open, so that many Ugandan children who are hungry can get at least one meal and one snack a day and so that many Ugandan children who could not otherwise go to school may now do so. A school named Gateway Nursery and Primary School (previously known as Hope International School).
This school is one of three arms of a larger effort, called Gateway Ministries, which also serves through a local church (Gateway Church—are you detecting a pattern?) and through an orphanage known as Mama Catherine’s Children’s Home. All three of these ministries are overseen by Pastor Ernest and Mama Catherine.
The goals for the, His Love and SONshine, ministry are simple, yet they are crucial to the success of the school and, more importantly, to the lives of these village school children. Gateway Nursery and Primary School is based in Bwerenga Village Uganda. This is a wonderful Christian school. The director of the school, Pastor Ernest, is a Ugandan as pictured above with his wife. He and his wife for over 40 years have taken in over 200 children. Pastor Ernest and Principal Henry run Gateway Nursery and Primary School. Our ministry has partnered with this school for 9 years. Our ministry is not a 501(c)3 but as God would have it through a dear friend of mine, who is on the His Love and SONshine board, connected me with her ministry accountant/his accountant business whom we have used for the past 9 years called Seek & Serve. Our ministry, His Love and SONshine, is umbrellaed under their ministry as they are a 501(c)3 and they are the ones who transfer the funds over to Uganda and handle all financial matters. For 7 years we were supporting the school by sending monthly funds to pay for most of the teachers' salaries. My board and I decided a couple of years ago that we would change from sending monthly funds for teachers' salaries to doing child sponsorship. Our ministry partners with Bright Point which is a 501(c)3 who works with countless ministries across the world to partner with individual ministries so that we can all do child sponsorship through them. My family's dear friend, Charles Byaruhanga and his family are like family to us and also happen to be Ugandan. They are incredible dear Godly humans. My board and I hired Charles to become the child sponsorship coordinator for His Love and Sonshine. He works through our ministry as we partner with Bright Point. Charles checks in on the children who are sponsored, updates Bright Point/ His Love and Sonshine on how the sponsored children are doing and does a child sponsorship audit to make sure they are still attending school and pours Christ' joy into each staff member and child at the school. When he is sent letter templates to pass out to the sponsored children at the school when he goes twice a month. He collects the child sponsorship notes and sends them via email to Bright Point and to me so that Bright Point can send them to the sponsors. The sponsors are able to directly impact the children through prayer and writing letters to the children.
Would you consider giving “cups of water” with us to these precious Ugandan children?
